There’s a lot there, but one of the main themes to emerge is that cardiovascular exercise really seems to enhance cognitive function in the hours after the exercise is finished. - This effect is not observed to nearly the same degree after resistance training. Of course, both are very important to do. I make it a point to do two or three sessions of each, every week. (The specifics of that routine are available at hubermanlab.com at no cost whatsoever to access. Simply put “foundational fitness protocol” into the search function. It’s there as a PDF Newsletter). - One important note, however, is that if you exhaust yourself with exercise, you can be sure that your brain will not function as well in the hours after. Even if you hydrate and eat well. And since most of us are not paid to exercise, but rather need to rely on other means to make a living, it’s often useful to keep a little bit of gas in the tank and not push to 10 out of 10 workouts every time or to save those for when you don’t have to do cognitively demanding work afterwards. - All that said, I’m curious what your experience is. - Let me know in the comments. - EXERCISE AS A WAY TO ACCESS NEUROPLASTICITY • - Exercise has many benefits: cardiovascular health, neuromuscular health, metabolism, aesthetic changes, brain health, mental health, and on and on. Exercise even makes your food taste better. That’s a real thing. - One of the best supported, but lesser discussed virtues of exercise is that it can impact your brain’s ability to self modify, so-called adaptive neuroplasticity. This process resides at the heart of all forms of learning- both cognitive and physical. - Numerous studies show that people remember and learn things better in the hours after exercise. Most of the data on this are for cardiovascular exercise, but there are growing number of studies suggesting this is the case after resistance training too. (Obviously if you completely exhaust yourself training, learning is going to be harder afterwards.) - It’s abundantly clear that everybody should get both cardiovascular and resistance training in each week. Both both have distinct and overlapping benefits. 2-4days of each is generally agreed upon as the target for most people (depending on your goals and recovery). - For a zero cost program that offers various options you can go to hubermanlab.com and enter “Foundational Fitness Protocol” into the search function. There is no sign-up required to access and again it’s zero cost. You can see all the sets and reps, options to replace types of training etc. It’s merely one template you customize. I happens to be what I do amidst a very busy schedule and I have fairly low recovery quotient. So I think it can be useful but do what’s best for you! - Final point is that **exercise opens the gate to plasticity but you still have to actively try and learn new things**. - NATURALLY ENHANCING DOPAMINE TO IMPROVE LEARNING • - On a recent episode of the Huberman Lab podcast, I discussed science supported tools for studying and learning. One of the most powerful tools, it turns out, is to self test soon after being exposed to new material. That led to significant increases in the depth and persistence of learning. - And today on the Huberman Lab podcast, I interviewed an expert on memory. That episode will be out soon. They shared with me something incredible and important. Data from his laboratory show that when people are curious about the answer to a question, it increases activity in the brain areas controlling dopamine release. And that dopamine release allows for better memory of the correct answr as well as better memory of events and information that preceded the answer. - Given that one of the most common questions I get is “how can I increase my dopamine levels?”, I felt this was important information to share. It means that you can leverage your curiosity toward learning anything.
