  • 🇬🇷 If I asked you to point out Corfu on a map, could you do it? I could not have before visiting. It’s off Greece’s northwest coast and serves as the capital for the Ionian Islands. We drove around it first, passing roman ruins of homes that still had their mosaic floors intact and visible from the road before pausing at a harbor for small boats where my feet itched to walk down the stairs into water so clear it was like transparent teal glass. 🐭 Mouse Island, which may owe its name to its size not an infestation of small rodents, and the church of Panagia Vlacherna was seen from the hill above where planes land so close it feels as if you could reach out and touch them. ✈️ Then we made our way to Corfu town and one of the things I noticed immediately was what felt like a mix of cultural influences. That’s because Corfu’s heritage is a reflection of rule by Venetians, French, and the British before unification with Greece in 1864. The town of Corfu is almost in the center of two Venetian-era fortresses which perhaps contributed to it being the only part of Greece never conquered by the Ottomans. Some of the Old Town’s streets are so narrow as to feel medieval. The area was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007. And the French-style arcade that’s prominent in town, when you come from the cricket field, felt so Parisian as to give me a sense of deja vu. 🇫🇷 We sampled and then purchased kumquat liquor, which is delicious!! We picked out an olive wood serving dish and wandered some more as town began to wake up and the sun started to bake the island with heat, even in October! Finally, we sat down with kastilwell and her husband for ice cold bottles of Corfu Special Red Ale. This was another stop, on our hosted “Empires of the Mediterranean” sailing with vikingcruises, that I would return to. 📚 Perhaps after I read Gerald Durrell’s trilogy of Corfu memoirs or watch all four seasons of “The Durrells in Corfu” which was based on his family and partially filmed on Corfu. Have you seen it? 🎥 #MyVikingStory
  • What happens once in a super blue moon… the light of it nearly floods out the stars and makes the mountains glow. Meeting autpops and doing the night photography workshop with her while at #SonyKandoTrip was one of the things I was most looking forward to. She doesn’t disappoint and neither does night photography, for me, ever. Even when I don’t get the thing I hope to get but something completely different instead. There’s just something about being under the stars at 11,000 feet with other photographers that makes my soul come alive. Now I want to do a workshop in a place like Norway with Autumn and Nate so I can continue to perfect shooting the sky. Captured with the new-to-me a7R IV and 14mm f/1.8 lens. Thank you sonyalpha sonyalphafemale for making it all possible. #SonyPartner #SonyAlpha
  • Made it to Venice, Italy yesterday with only enough time to see sunset and then find a place to eat dinner. But it didn’t really matter because any amount of time in Venezia always thrills me to my core. And what a sunset we saw!! 😍 I am sad to report that crowd level seems to be back to pre-pandemic levels and for myself I think this will be my last time here unless it’s in the dead of winter when there are likely to be less tourists (?) as being part of over-tourism for a place nearly being loved to death, doesn’t feel really good. I need to do more research and talk to more people that live here before I make any final decisions. What are your thoughts on over-tourism or visiting Venice? The city is seeking to combat over-tourism with a tax for day trippers and other tourists that I’ve outlined on my blog. I personally think it’s a good move. And I will be curious to see what residents like my friend neumarc think as it gets implemented and we see whether or not it has a positive impact. Venice also banned large cruise ships from the Venetian Lagoon as it caused intense damage to the ecosystem when they were allowed. Speaking of cruises, I’m in Italy to head to the port and fishing town of Chiaggio where we are joining vikingcruises for their “Empires of the Mediterranean” sailing. It is Dante’s first time on a cruise and Viking is one of the only lines I will go on an ocean cruise with because their ship has a passenger capacity less then 1/3 the size of the average for the industry. They also seem to be making honest strides to ensure they operate in ways that are as responsible and ethical as possible. I’ve also never met an employee who didn’t LOVE working for Viking. The ones I’ve met when on the river and one ocean cruise so far have been some of the happiest tourism employees I’ve found the world over. This is starting to sound like a commercial 😂 and I didn’t mean to do that. But I am grateful to be hosted by Viking again so I can share more about them. AMA in the comments and I’ll answer honestly ⤵️ Thank you for making it this far. I hope your week is off to a great start ❤️ #myvikingstory #myvikingjourney #vikingcruises
